SAN DIEGO – Canada’s Bianca Andreescu will face Coco Gauff for the first time Thursday in the second round of the San Diego Open.
Sixth-seeded Gauff defeated Robin Montgomery 6-3, 6-3 on Wednesday.
Aged just 18, Gauff reached the French Open final this year, losing 6-1, 6-3 to Iga Swiatek.
Montgomery is also an 18-year-old African American.
Gauff said the match was even more talked about because of Serena Williams’ withdrawal, but also the fact that her sister Venus could do the same.
“I think they would have something to be proud of,” Gauff said. Robin and I follow in their footsteps, we are here because they have paved the way. »
“I am grateful to be able to follow their example. I hope to become a model too. »
The 2019 Flushing Meadows champion, Andreescu is ranked 57th on the WTA.
