PARIS, France – Britain’s Andy Murray (world No. 48) advanced to the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 tournament in Gijon on Thursday by defeating Argentina’s Pedro Cassin (61st) in 3 sets (2-6, 7-5, 7- 6 (7/ 3).
After an unsuccessful first set (2-6), the former world No. 1 bounced back in the second set to win 7-5 thanks to a return of serve and 83% first-ball points. Tied at the end of the game, the players had to decide in a final tiebreak heavily in favor of Murray.
An invitee to this tournament, Murray defeated No. 6 seed Alejandro Davidovic Fokina (7-5, 6-2) in the previous round. His last win was last August in the second round of the United States Open.
The Briton, a member of the “Big Four”, is coming off four seasons marred by COVID-19 and mostly by recurring injuries, including one to a hip that almost cost him his career in 2019 and to which he is now attached a metal prosthesis.
In the quarter-finals of Gijon, he will face the winner of the meeting between the American Sebastian Korda (47th) and the Spanish Roberto Bautista Agut (22nd).
