(Guadalajara) Quebecer Leylah Fernandez was unable to win the first round of the Guadalajara Open on Monday, losing her flag 5-7, 7-6 (10), 3-6 against Belinda Bencic after a fast-paced match lasting two hours and 45 minutes.

Bencic, 10e seed, had seven aces unlike Fernandez’s two. The Swiss also led 13-8 in terms of double faults against the Lavalloise.

Fernandez suffered a first career loss at the hands of Bencic after emerging victorious in the first two encounters.

Bencic, 14e world racket, will face American Sloane Stephens in the second round.

The other Canadian women in the running, however, were successful.

Ontario’s Bianca Andreescu posted an easy 6-2, 6-4 victory over Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann in the first round of the tournament.

Bianca Andreescu earned an easy 6-2, 6-4 win over Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann in the first round of the tournament.

A native of Mississauga, Andreescu has broken her opponent on five of her seven occasions and won 61% of her first-serve points. The 22-year-old will now cross swords with the winner of the duel between American Bernarda Pera and Czech Petra Kvitova.

British Columbia’s Rebecca Marino also won her first round match in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6 (2) over American Ann Li.

Marino had 11 aces against only one double fault and she converted three of her 10 break opportunities. Li committed five double faults and recorded only one break in three occasions.

The Vancouver native will take on France’s Caroline Garcia, 10e world racket.

The Guadalajara Open is the last WTA 1000 Series tournament of the season.
