Sakkari plays Collins in the third round of the Guadalajara Open
Collins beat Magdalena Fretz and will be the opponent of Maria Sakkari in the 3rd round of the Guadalajara Open.
In-form American and world No. 16 tennis player Danielle Collins meets Maria Sakkari in the 3rd round of the Guadalajara Open.
Collins beat Magdalena Fretz (No. 128) in straight sets and “closed” her important date with the 27-year-old Greek in the “16” phase of the WTA 1000 tournament in Mexico.
After 96 minutes of play, this year’s Australian Open finalist, who had had an excellent week in San Diego when she reached the semi-finals of the event (WTA 500), prevailed over Fretz 6-3, 6-4 and she – and she – stayed alive looking for a ticket leading to the WTA Finals in Texas.
Collins sits 14th in the race for the US Finals and still has hopes of qualifying. So it’s understandable that whatever they lose in the game, Sakkari and Collins also remain mathematically disqualified from the WTA Finals.
In the past, Maria has beaten her closest opponent in their only meeting on the tour. In 2018, in the semifinals of the San Jose Open, Sakkari eliminated Collins in three sets to reach the first WTA final of her career.
