(Stockholm) Canadian Denis Shapovalov lost in straight sets 6-2, 7-6 (4) to Australian Alex De Minaur in the quarter-finals of the Stockholm tennis tournament on Friday.
Facing the tournament’s fifth seed, Shapovalov, himself ranked fourth, proved to be erratic on serve, with six double faults and a single ace.
In the duel as a whole, the Ontarian won only 62% of the points on his serve (37 out of 60), compared to 72% for his opponent. Moreover, Shapovalov only saved two of the five break points he faced while De Minaur erased three out of four.
Shapovalov had as many winners as he had unforced errors, 22, while De Minaur had 16 winners and only 10 unforced errors.

The start of the first set gave Shapovalov a hint of the day ahead, as he found himself down to a 0-4 deficit. From then on, De Minaur lost just one point on his serve, and he completed that first set in 40 minutes.
The 23-year-old Canadian, 20e world player, started the second set much better, winning the first two games, including the second serving the Australian. But the latter immediately responded with a break in the third game to bring the duel to even service.
In the tiebreaker, Shapovalov hit a mini-break that gave him a 2-0 lead. De Minaur salvaged that mini-break on the fifth point before scoring a second to give himself a 5-4 lead.
On his serve, De Minaur earned the next two points to end the game after 1:39 minutes of action.
In Saturday’s semi-final, De Minaur will face the winner of the duel between second-seeded Briton Cameron Norrie and seventh-seeded Dane Holger Rune.
In other quarter-final matches later on Friday, tournament favorite Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece takes on Sweden’s Mikael Ymer while third-seeded Frances Tiafoe of the United States takes on Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori.
