Simona Halep, world No. 9 and winner of two Grand Slams, has been caught doping after testing positive at this year’s US OPEN.
The Romanian tennis player stressed with her post on social media that her fight for the truth begins while she will try to prove that she did not knowingly ingest the banned substance.
Roxadustat is a substance used to treat anemia.
Halep’s contribution in detail:
“Now begins the most difficult fight of my life: a fight for the truth.
I was informed that I had tested positive at an extremely low level for a substance called roxadustat, which was the biggest shock of my life.
During my career, the idea of breaking the rules never crossed my mind as it is totally against all the principles learned. Faced with such an unfair situation, I feel completely confused and betrayed.
I will fight to the end to prove that I have never knowingly taken any banned substance and I believe that sooner or later the truth will be proven.
It’s not about titles or money. It’s about the honor and the love story I’ve developed for tennis over the past 25 years.”
