The former coach of Simona Halep, Adrian Marcu, believes that the banned drug could have entered the body of the Romanian tennis player along with the medicine that the athlete takes to treat the thyroid gland.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) suspended Halep from competition on October 21 for testing positive at this year’s US Open. Analysis of the B sample confirmed the result of the A sample, which found the WADA-banned drug roxadastat.
— I can say that I know Simone quite well. I have worked with her a lot and I know that she is an athlete who has always been careful about medication. To be honest, I can’t believe that she could do that, especially since it would supposedly improve her physical form, which was already at the highest level. I don’t know why she would do this, ”Tennis World USA quotes Mark with reference to Digi Sport. – Simone’s strength was the physical part. I’m amazed that this happened. They will do their best to find out where this substance came from.
An athlete of the level of Simona has to announce every day where she will be tomorrow, and I believe that Simona has passed hundreds of anti-doping tests. I think it’s hard to call this a medical error, but I know that Simone has some thyroid problems. This is a difficult situation for a great athlete who I consider honest. I have known her for a long time and was with her 24/7. I don’t understand how it happened. I talked to her, but I have nothing to tell you. I wish her great success to prove her case, says Marcu.
The Romanian has won two Grand Slams in singles – the French Open 2018 and Wimbledon 2019. In total, she won 25 WTA tournaments (24 of them in singles). Halep was number one in the WTA rankings for 64 weeks.
