Tsitsipas excluded from the Vienna tournament, eliminated in the tie-break by Coric
In a sensational match that was decided in a tie-break, Borna Coric overcame Stefanos Tsitsipas resistance with a 2-1 set and secured a ticket to the quarter-finals of the Vienna tournament.
Stefanos Tsitsipas lost a lead on set and break (4-6, 0-2) and was defeated in the ’16’ stage of the Erste Bank Open with a big upset by Borna Tsoric, who knew his third straight elimination.
Just as he was defeated by Grigor Dimitrov in 2020, just as he was defeated by Francis Tiafou in 2021, the Greek tennis player lost with an upset in the 2nd round of the ATP 500 tournament in Austria and retired early from the event.
After two hours and 42 minutes of a long battle, Coric won second place on the board, with 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(4) and reached the quarterfinals where he will meet No. 5 on the board, Hubert Hurkatz.
Bouncing back from a break in the third set of the game (2-3) the 24-year-old Greek couldn’t find a way to avoid defeat, accepting a crucial mini-break in the game’s deciding tie-break (3-2) .
Despite serving 14 aces and scoring 30 winners, Stefanos saw that Coric wasn’t… sloppy, played amazing tennis in the crucial moments and left with the big qualifier.
As in the final of the Cincinnati Masters on August 21, the Croatian prevailed against Tsitsipas on Thursday evening (October 27) and celebrated his first victory over a top 10 player in two months.
At 42 Winners, Coric’s counterattack stopped, with Stefanos getting injured from the many failed break attempts. He finished the match on 3/12, as opposed to his opponent’s 3/6.
With that defeat, Tsitsipas missed a big chance to move closer to the top 3 in the world rankings in the week that Kasper Rudd (No. 3) was eliminated in his Basel debut (ATP 500).
