Sakkari – Contaveit 1:2: Defeat in detail for Maria in the exciting final in St. Petersburg
Maria Sakkari lost in St. Petersburg after an exciting and detailed final with a 2:1 set against Annette Contaveit.
Maria Sakkari and Annette Contaveit offered their tennis friends a dreadful final, and after a nearly three-hour fight, they declared Estonia the winner with a 2-1 set.
The 26-year-old Greek won the first set and had opportunities to end the final in both the second and third sets, but failed to do so. On the contrary, the No. 9 in the world rankings was cooler on the crucial points and achieved victory.
The game: Sakkari went into the final aggressively and didn’t leave much room for Condaveit, especially in her own service games. However, in the only one not to serve first, the Estonian injured her by grabbing the break and then kept hers for a 5-2 lead.
Everything seemed to have gone to Condaveit by this point, but Maria Sakkari had a different opinion and proved it emphatically on the pitch.
The 26-year-old Greek won the next five games with a terrible upset, going 7-5 to make sets 1-0. The terrible thing about Sakkari was that she took 20 points during that period, which was almost unmistakable (just 12 effortless errors against Contaveit’s 23), while the Estonian only got 4.
With psychology soaring, Sakkari managed to start the second set ideally after a break in the first game and then held at love to lead 2-0. Somewhere there, however, problems began for Maria, as it was difficult to find an initial service.
So Contavehit quickly got the break back and brought the set to a draw. Then the two athletes held their serve lightly or with difficulty. The two athletes resolved their differences in the tiebreak, where the Estonian smiled, and secured the 1:1 set win with 7:6 (4).
The third set began similarly to the second, only this time Maria Sakkari took a 3-0 lead and seemed to have the upper hand.
However, Contaveit has proved once again that they are in a terrible situation, which is attested by their 20 consecutive wins in indoor tournaments.
Estonia broke when Sakkari served to close the game and then won the next two games to end the final 7-5.
