Pegula – Sakkari 0-2: In the inaugural WTA Finals, Maria stunningly beat the American to claim her first win
After a grueling two-long-set battle, Maria Sakkari (No. 5) defeated American Jessica Pegula (No. 3) 2-0 (7-6, 7-6) on her debut at the WTA Finals in Texas to take the win the rematch for himself defeat in Guadalajara.
Maria Sakkari (No. 5) started her attempt at the WTA Finals with a right hand as she won her first win against American Jessica Pegula (No. 3) won 2-0 (7-6, 7-6) set at its premiere.
This was the sixth meeting between them, with the Greek counting four wins and the American two more. In their last meeting, Maria was defeated in the final of the Guadalajara 1000.
The first set turned into a hard-fought 71-minute rally from which Pegula eventually retired in the tie break. Even though made it difficult for Sakkari by saving two set points, the Greek tennis player “closed” the set as she started it, winning it 8-6.
In the second set, Maria was strong and won the first three games, but the American came back and leveled the game, making it 3-3.
Like the first, the second set went into a tiebreak after Pegula saved two match points, with Maria subduing the American to win the rematch 7-6 after 2 hours and 11 minutes.
