Rune: The incredible performance of the 19-year-old Dane who went down in tennis history
In addition to winning the Paris Masters, Holger Rune has achieved something never before achieved in tennis history as he defeated five top 10 athletes to win the trophy.
Last Sunday (6/11) Holger Rune won the last 1000 of the season and defeated Novak Djokovic in the final.
However, alongside the biggest title and win of his career, the 19-year-old Dane achieved something unparalleled in tennis history since, of course, the top 10 came into our lives.
The Dane was the only player to beat five top 10 players in a tournament, as until Sunday only 11 players had beaten four top 10 players in one event while taking home the trophy.
Among them and even in the same tournament (Paris Masters) were Djokovic’s coach Goran Ivanisevic as well as Karen Khachanov in 2018
The Dane’s path to winning the title:
- 1st Round: Stanislas Wawrinka – Former No. 3 and holder of three Grand Slam titles
- 2nd round: Hubert Hurkatz – No. 10 and contender for a ticket to the ATP Finals
- 3rd round: Andrei Rublev – No. 9 and one of the “8” of the ATP Finals
- Quarterfinals: Carlos Alcarath – No. 1 and recent US Open winner
- Semi-finals: Felix Auxerre Aliasim – No. 8 and on a 16-game win streak
- Final: Novak Djokovic – No. 7, winner of six Paris titles and a 20-game winning streak
