Caroline Garcia, who knocked out Maria Sakkari in the semifinals, won the title at the WTA Finals in Fort Worth and celebrated the most important trophy of her career.
No. 6 of the Texas board was imposed after a thrilling and close fight 7-6(4), 6-4 by Arina Sambalenka, who won her 4th title in her fantastic season.
“It was a very intense final. I’m very proud of how I stayed calm and collected at every point of the game.” Garcia said shortly after, wearing the traditional Texas cowboy hat.
Only a break decided about the victory of the final, because in the opening set neither of the two tennis players managed to create even one break opportunity, both served excellently.
Garcia showed a little more composure and competence in the tiebreak, although she needed three set points to finish it.
The break in the opening game of the 2nd set gave the 29-year-old French the victory after she continued to serve excellently and didn’t give her opponent a chance and completed her great victory after 1 hour and 42 minutes.
The title in Texas puts Garcia at No. 4 in the world, Sabalenka at No. 5 and Sakkari at No. 6.
