21-year-old Frenchman Hugo Gaston meets Stefanos Tsitsipas on Thursday (17 February) on his debut in the second round of the Marseille tournament.

21-year-old Frenchman Hugo Gaston (No. 68) meets Stefanos Tsitsipas (No. 4) on his debut in the Marseille tournament on Thursday (February 17).

Gaston won the ‘civil war’ with Corentan Moute and sealed his date with the Greek tennis player in the 2nd round of this year’s Open 13 in Marseille. This will be the two’s first meeting on the tour.

After an hour and 45 minutes, Gaston prevailed 6-4, 6-4 in the final game of Tuesday’s program and defeated Mute, earning only his second win of 2022 (he now has a record of 2-5).

Gaston is currently ranked No. 68 in the world, with a career record No. 66, and is considered one of the rising stars of French tennis. It has a height of only 1.73 m. and is characterized by its fighting spirit and spark on the field.

If found in his time, he can make life difficult for any opponent, especially when his compatriots support him from the stands. Typical examples are the two best courses in Gaston’s career so far.

Both came to French soil. At Roland Garros in 2020, the Frenchman had reached the “16” stage where he was eliminated in five sets by Dominic Tim, while earlier he had defeated Stanislas Vavrinkas (in the 2nd round).

Most recently, his excellent run at the Masters in Paris. The 21-year-old played in the first Masters quarterfinal of his career last November, losing to eventual finalist Daniel Medvedev.
