Ruud-Djokovic 0-2: Nole triumphs as ATP Finals title draws Federer
Novak Djokovic (No. 8) triumphed in the top game against Casper Rude (No. 4) and secured the ATP Finals title with a 2-0 (7: 5, 6: 3) victory. 6th in his career, equal to Federer.
Novak Djokovic (No. 8) claimed his 5th consecutive win in Turin this week and claimed a historic 6th ATP Finals title of his career, equaling Roger Federer’s magnificent tournament record.
The 35-year-old Serb defeated No. 4 Casper Rudd in straight sets on Sunday (11/20) and made history as he claimed the undefeated title to win the biggest prize money in tennis history.
With the trophy that Nole made for himself in the “Pala Alpitour”, he will be 4,800,000 euros richer. Never before has a prize worth more than €4,000,000 been awarded.
To make it, Djokovic defeated Rude 7-5, 6-3 in the finals and went 5/5 this week after wins over Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrei Rublev, Daniil Medvedev and Taylor Fritz.
A number of records were broken by the title win for Nole, who, in addition to claiming the historic prize purse of €4.8 million, became the oldest tennis player to reach the ATP Finals trophy and only 2nd in the Story. who was crowned champion in three different cities.
The 35-year-old Serb has held the prestigious ATP Finals trophy in his hands since 2015. In 2016 and 2018 he lost in the final to Murray and Zverev respectively, while in the previous three years he did not clear the semi-final hurdle.
It took him 94 minutes to break Ruud’s resistance, with his serve being his main weapon. Trailing 44/55 earned points, Djokovic ‘finished’ the match, finding a way not to drop even a set against the 23-year-old Norwegian despite his 33 unforced errors.
Riding to the 91st ATP title of his impressive career, he competed in his 130th ATP Finals and kept Rudd from adding the biggest accolade of his career as the Norwegian lost in a 3rd Grand Finals this year after winning at Roland had lost Garros (by Nadal) and at the US Open (by Alkarath).
Rude was “hurt” by a few moments of inactivity behind his serve and failed to make a good match from the return position, from where he didn’t even get a break point!
After this win, Djokovic secured his return to the top 5 in the world rankings. It will climb to number 5 on Monday (11/21) and be close to the top positions again.
Kasper Ruud has earned a place with his run to the final in Turin and will leave Stefanos Tsitsipas in 4th place.
