Davis Cup Finals: Italy and Canada “closed out” in 4th place
The foursome of the Davis Cup Finals is over, Italy and Canada secure the last two tickets.
What if they fought without Yannick Sinner and Matteo Beretini? The Italians pulled off a megaton surprise, beating the very strong United States of America and reaching the Davis Cup semi-finals for the first time in eight years!
Great day for Lorenzo Sonego (#45), who won with 6-3, 7-6(7) In 2022, the in-form Francis Tiafoe (No.19) gave his country a 1-0 lead before Taylor Fritz (No.9) equalized 7-6(8), 6-3in 1-1, against Lorenzo Muzzetti (No. 23).
The rubber was decided in a third tie, with US captain Mardy Fish selecting Jack Sock and Tommy Paul for the doubles, eliminating world-ranked doubles player and recent ATP Finals winner Rajiv Ram from the competition.
That didn’t go so well as the Italians took advantage of the situation and won with me 6-4, 6-4thanks to the experienced Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli, a qualification that will be talked about for a long time.
And before comments died down about Fish’s decision to keep Ram out and effectively… hand the win to Italy, there was another big result as Canada completed a major upset over Germany for its place in the “4” best internationals to secure teams 2022.
Despite giving his country the lead, Jan Leonard Struff (No. 152) beat Denis Shapovalov (No. 18) along 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(2)Felix Auxerre Aliasim (No. 6) arrived to give Canada the kiss of life and with a win 7-6(1), 6-4 via Oscar Ote (No. 65) to send the rubber to a crucial doubles game.
There the Germans had the upper hand as they had one of the top twins in the world in their ranks.
However, Tim Puget and Kevin Kravitz, despite leading by a set, suffered a painful defeat with an upset at the hands of the spirited Denis Shapovalov and Vasek Pospisil, with the quarter-final stage of this year’s Davis Cup Finals ending in the early hours of Friday (11/25) in Malaga.
The Canadians qualified with 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 and “booked” an appointment with the Italians in the semi-finals on Saturday (November 26th).
