Federer on his resignation: ‘One of the first to know was Nadal’
Roger Federer has revealed that Rafa Nadal was one of the first to announce his retirement and described the emotional moment in an interview.
Last September, Roger Federer announced his final retirement from professional tennis, plunging millions of fans into grief. One of the first to know about the Swiss king’s decision was Rafael Nadal, as revealed by Federer himself on the Trevor Noah show.
Specifically, the Swiss said: “My hope was to play doubles with Rafa at the Laver Cup. So I called him after the US Open. It was a very emotional phone call because he was one of the first outside of my team and my family to find out about me decision to retire.
I called him and said, ‘Hey Rafa, before you make any plans I really want you to come to the Laver Cup and maybe we can play my last match together. It would be wonderful. Unfortunately my knee is not doing well and I think the end has come.
Rafa said to me, ‘Okay, oh my god, okay. Yes, I’ll be there no matter what'”
