“Tried to regain concentration.” Tsitsipas on going to the bathroom against Dimitrov at the United Cup
Greek tennis player Stefanos Tsitsipas has revealed how going to the toilet helped him beat Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov in the United Cup tournament.
Group A meeting ended with the score 4:6, 6:2, 7:6 (7:4) in favor of Tsitsipas. At the 2021 US Open, Briton Andy Murray criticized the Greek athlete for his long trips to the toilet between sets, stating that “Tsitsipas takes twice as long to go to the toilet as Jeff Bezos to fly into space.” Dissatisfaction was also expressed by other tennis players, after which the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) introduced restrictions on the number and duration of visits to the toilets per match.
— I think we both served very well during the whole match. There weren’t many moments where I felt like I could do anything other than the second set, which went very well for me.
After the first set, I went to the toilet, where I tried to restore the level of concentration and rethink what happened. I came back fresher and more determined, which allowed me to make a double break.
You just need to fight. There is no easy solution and no recipe for victory. I knew that deep down I faced such situations many times in my career, — quotes the words of Tsitsipas Tennis Majors.
United Cup runs from December 29 to January 8.
