Sakkari: “If I win, Greece will win too”

Maria Sakkari expressed her enthusiasm for her participation in the Australian Open, stressing that when she wins, all of Greece wins.

Eager to compete again in front of the strong Greek crowd in Melbourne, said Maria Sakkari (No6), speaking to the Australian Open official channel ahead of the first Grand Slam of the season, which will be played from September 16-29 January.

Greece’s leading tennis player is set to take part in the Happy Slam for the eighth straight year and has every reason to be optimistic that this will be the best of the Australian Open.

The 26-year-old has never made it past the fourth round in Melbourne and has consistently been one of the island’s strong underdogs for the past year.


“It’s always nice to come back to Melbourne. It feels like my second home because of the large Greek community. I can’t wait for the tournament to start. My country is one of the reasons I play tennis and why I want to If I win, Greece wins too.

I love the passion of the Greeks here. I really enjoy playing in front of them. I grew up with a dream. I’m here, healthy and doing what I love. There’s no reason why I shouldn’t be happy.” said Sakkari of the excellent honor she received at the Australian Open.
