Sakkari: ‘I wanted to win for Greece more than for myself’
Maria Sakkati spoke about her win over Elise Mertens, stressing that she wanted the win more for Greece than for her.
Maria Sakkari, 27, spoke to the 27-year-old immediately after beating Elise Mertens, who sent the Greek side to the final in Perth on Wednesday, that she wished this victory more for our country than for herself.
“If you only play for yourself in a regular tournament, if you lose you’re on your own, but I wanted to win for Greece more than for myself. It means a lot for me, for the team, for our country. It’s great that we’re in the Perth final.”said the Greek tennis player in the on-court interview.
“The ball flew very quickly because of the heat. I had to stay calm and try to find heavy hits. I think I did well even though I had a drop in the 2nd set. I was in a bit of a rush, but I realized it and changed it immediately.
I need to improve my approaches to the web, I need to be bolder. I’m also working on my serve to have better percentages while there’s room for improvement on every shot and that’s a good thing. I think I’ll feel better every day and I’ll give myself chances, first then in mixed doubles, but also tomorrow.”.
