(Adelaide) Ontario’s Bianca Andreescu lost 6-4, 6-0 to Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova in the round of 16 at the Adelaide International Tournament on Wednesday.
Andreescu, 46e world player, fell to the fourth seed of the tournament after just one hour and 19 minutes of play. It was the first career match between the two players.
The 2019 U.S. Open champion double faulted twice, to her rival’s zero, and proved less efficient than her on serve.
Plus, she gave Kudermetova way too many break opportunities. The Russian stole the Canadian’s serve six times in 15 occasions, while Andreescu converted just one of her three break points.
Kudermetova will face in the quarterfinals the winner of the duel between the Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, seventh seed, and the Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu.
On the other hand, Aryna Sabalenka and Marketa Vondrousova will meet in the quarter-finals after each winning their match on Wednesday.
Second-seeded Sabalenka defeated Liudmila Samsonova 7-6(8) 7-6(3) after a tough match that lasted two hours and 15 minutes.
Vondrousova, who was a finalist at the French Open in 2019, beat Kaia Kanepi 6-0, 6-4.
On the men’s side, Daniil Medvedev ousted Miomir Kecmanovic 6-0, 6-3 in the round of 16.
The former world No. 1 – now ranked seventh in the world – triumphed easily on Wednesday, improving his career record to 3-0 against the Serbian, 29e in the world.
Third-seeded Medvedev will face compatriot Karen Khachanov in his next game. Khachanov, who advanced to the semi-finals last year at Flushing Meadows, defeated Britain’s Jack Draper 6-4, 6-2.
“I am very happy to have been able to win this match, I am satisfied with my level of play and I am looking forward to my next duel, agreed Medvedev. Miomir is a formidable adversary, very cunning. There aren’t many easy-to-beat players left here in Adelaide; in fact, I’m not sure there were any in the first round. »
Favorite Novak Djokovic, who has won 30 singles matches on Australian soil, will face Frenchman Quentin Halys on Thursday, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
The winner of this match will face Canadian Denis Shapovalov, seeded seventh.
The Maple Leaf representative won 6-4, 6-3 against Russia’s Roman Safiullin, 88e in the world.
Shapovalov won the last four games of the encounter, finishing the game with four breaks.
The Ontarian is 0-7 against Djokovic. He never faced Halys.
