Former world No. 1 to miss Australian Open due to injury

Former world No. 1 Venus Williams will miss the Australian Open due to an injury, according to the press service of the tournament organizers.
Williams Sr. was injured at a tournament in New Zealand Auckland. The wild card will go from 42-year-old American to Australian Kimberly Birrell. Spaniard Carlos Alcaras has retired from the Australian Open.
The Australian Open will be held in Melbourne from 16 to 29 January.
Also on Saturday, the organizers of the second tournament in Adelaide said that the first racket of the world, Iga Sventek, would not compete due to a shoulder injury.
