Tsitsipas and Sakkari: “We are proud of this team”
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari talked about qualifying for the United Cup semi-finals and couldn’t hide their delight at the excellent performance of the Greek team.
The Greek team is in the semi-finals of the United Cup after their victory Maria Sakkaris and Stefanos Tsitsipas against Martic and Goyo.
Immediately after the end of the game, the Greek duo spoke from the pitch about their magnificent victory, but also about the overall presence of the Greek team.
First, Maria Sakkari explained: “I’m happy and proud of this team. It’s the first tournament of the year, we didn’t know what shape we were going to be in but it looks like we’re doing fine.”
Then she was asked about her collaboration with Stefanos Tsitsipas in doubles, emphasizing: “From the first time on this pitch our games clicked, we know each other well, we have great chemistry and that’s the key. Of course it’s important that we continue to develop as players, so we play even better in mixed“.
For his part, Stefanos Tsitsipas referred to the atmosphere created by the friends of the two teams: “We had to face a strong team. I want to congratulate them because they gave their all today. The foundation was laid by our Hopman Cup games. It’s a great night and the crowd here created a great atmosphere. Greeks and Croatians came here and gave everything”.
Maria Sakkari was also in the eyes of the Greek fans: “The Australian Open is our Grand Slam and every tournament in Australia feels like home. Supporting Greeks and the way they treat us is special and we are grateful to have a great culture, big heart and people who love their country. We couldn’t have asked for more, I’m sure the reception in Sydney was good.”
Regarding the games with Italy, Stefanos Tsitsipas said: “We are already preparing, spiritually we are already there. I’m proud of the team, we are fighters. The first step here in Perth will be unforgettable, I’m glad we took it here. We’ll be in Sydney, but our hearts will be here. There is something special about it and we hope to come back here for years to come.”.
