LONDON – A man convicted of harassing United States Open champion Emma Raducanu faces up to five years in prison.

Amrit Magar, a 35-year-old former delivery man from London, was also sentenced to an 18-month community service order involving 200 hours of unpaid work. It will be subject to a traffic ban for eight weeks and will be monitored by an electronic lighthouse.

Magar, whose trial took place last month, visited 19-year-old Raducanu’s home on three different dates late last year, took a walk outside, dropped gifts and junk cards, and stole goods under the gallery. On one occasion, he decorated a tree in the front garden with Christmas lights.

He also left a bouquet of flowers with a personal note. Another time he drew a map to show the 37 kilometers he had traveled from his house.

Magar was arrested after Raducanu’s father was alerted by a surveillance camera. He was found guilty in the Bromley Magistrates’ Court.

Raducanu became famous last September when it won the US Open after qualifying, one of the sport’s most incredible achievements. Two months earlier, he had reached the fourth round of Wimbledon, also after having to go through the qualifiers.

The lawsuit alleges that Magar told officers he was attracted to Radukanu “because of his high profile position after winning the US Open.”

The order prohibits Magar from contacting Raducanu or her parents, approaching a mile from their road and visiting any sports ground, stadium or training center where she competes or trains.
