ACAPULCO, Mexico – Daniil Medvedev came one step closer to his goal of becoming the No. 1 racket in the world by reaching the quarterfinals of the Acapulco tournament on Wednesday after beating Pablo Andujar in the second round.
It took Medvedev a little over an hour to beat Andujar in the straight set 6-1, 6-2.
The 26-year-old Russian will face either Taylor Fritz or Yoshihito Nisiokas in the next round.
He will move up to No. 1 in the world, currently held by Novak Djokovic, if he wins the tournament.
Medvedev won his first Grand Slam title last September when he beat Djokovic in the US Open final.
He reached the final of the Australian Open last month but lost to Rafael Nadal.
