Elena Christofi, the tennis player who caught the eye on the other side of the Atlantic

Greek tennis not only has a present but also a future. And in this future, Elena Christofi has a special place. The 23-year-old tennis player, who made her journey across the Atlantic in 2018 and has excelled in the United States, still has a lot to achieve.

Greece is undoubtedly experiencing the golden age of tennis in recent years, starring Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari.

However, the “spring” of Greek tennis does not stop there. In addition to the present, there is also the future and that includes many talents and great athletes, including Elena Christofi.

The 23-year-old Greek tennis player began her studies in 2016 in the financial world at the University of Georgia, where he received a scholarship, followed by a master’s degree in financial planning and consulting. But aside from her stellar career on the court – with a career high of 8th overall in the collegiate championship (ITA Collegiate Rankings) – Christofi also shone on the courses.

Crossing the Atlantic from Athens, Elena, then 18, managed to stand out in her freshman season at the University of Georgia.

Notably, he secured a spot on the All-Southeastern Conference of the United States’ Best Team of the Year. This is an imaginary team made up of the 14 best tennis players in the region.

With 28 wins in 33 games (28-5), she had the best singles record of any of her teammates, making her one of the top rookies in the region. In its freshman year, it climbed to number 19 in the ITA and ranked fifth among the undergraduates of any university in the United States.

In 2016 he played on the main board of the Grand Slam for the first time and although he did not manage to win the Australian Open, he left Melbourne full of experiences and beautiful pictures.

The difference on the other side of the Atlantic

In 2020, Elena Christofi emerged as a top athlete from the University of Georgia and achieved major honors by winning the nomination for the NCAA Female Athlete of the Year award.

This is the award for the best athlete of the year and is the highest award in the United States university system, which includes athletes from all categories and from 24 different sports.

Christofi had a fantastic year, finishing with a record 81-30 wins in singles and 84-42 in doubles and competing at the top of the United States College Championship.

The titles at Lyttos Beach

The 23-year-old was one of the players who also caught the eye at the Futures of Lyttos Beach in Heraklion. The young tennis player had one semifinal and two quarterfinals in singles, won two consecutive titles in doubles in Heraklion and is now ranked 1084 in the world.

The Greek tennis player’s course is steadily rising, since November 22, 2021 she has gained 127 positions. Of course, she has ranked higher, at 1062 in September 2016, which is her career high.

Elena Christofi and Martha Matoula won the doubles title at Lyttos Beach in Heraklion

On November 13, they won the doubles title with teammate Martha Matoula at the $15,000 Lyttos Beach tournament in Heraklion, Crete. Christofi won her 3rd title on the ITF Tour, the first in 6 years as she had won 2 titles in 2015, also in Heraklion, Crete, in the $10,000 category.

Elena Christofi and Dimitra Pavlou won the doubles title at Lyttos Beach in Heraklion

A week later they won the doubles title of the $15,000 event of Lyttos Beach in Heraklion along with Dimitra Pavlou, with Christofi winning the 2nd consecutive Lyttos Beach title and 4th career in the ITF Tour.

However, discrimination against Christ is not limited to the judgment. In May 2019, the Greek was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District Women’s At-Large First Team, an award that combines her athletic performance with her accomplishments on University of Georgia courses.

The best Greek tennis player is of course Maria Sakkari (No. 6 in the world), who was also the first Greek woman to finish a season in the top 10, however, remarkable women tennis players are following and the future of Greek tennis is starting to…hand over the certificates.
