Goff – Sakkari 0-2: Maria is imposing, with momentum in the semis
America’s Coco Goff was no obstacle to the rousing Maria Sakkari, who finished first in the foursome at the Doha 1000-do tournament with a 2-0 win in Thursday’s quarterfinals. Sampalenka or Sviatek is their next opponent.
Maria Sakkari’s (No. 6) clean-shooting 3/3 against American tennis players at the Doha tournament ended in a comfortable 2-0 win over Coco Goff (No. 23).
Having previously eliminated Ann Lee and Jessica Pengula without dropping a set, the 26-year-old Greek played with high intensity against the talented 17-year-old and by taking exactly what the match gave her, she confirmed her superiority its hard surface. Qatar Total Open 2022.
As hard as Goff struggled at times, he hadn’t been able to withstand Sakkari’s key strikes as well as needed. The Greek managed a break in the first two games of the two sets served by her opponent and as the match progressed she alternately distributed her technique and power on the court.
She finished the first set with a second break, going comfortably to 6-3, giving her an advantage in the continuation, while going 4-0 very quickly in the second and without really threatening the rest of the game, eliminating her most inexperienced opponents with 6-3.
In the semifinals, Sakkari will face either Belarussian Sampalenka (No. 2) or Poland’s Sviatek (No. 8), who play against each other at night.
