Kokkinakis booked a date with Murray in the 2nd round of the Australian Open
Thanasis Kokkinakis overcame Fabio Fognini’s obstacle 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 and prevailed with Andy Murray in the 2nd round of the Australian Open.
Thanasis Kokkinakis on Wednesday completed what he started on Tuesday, beating Fabio Fognini 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 to seal qualification for the Australian Open’s second round, where he meets Andy Murray who prevailed with his lap against Matteo Berretini in the 5-hour marathon last Tuesday (17.1.).
In a match that was exposed to the rain for two days, Kokkinakis was the absolute ruler, conceding just 5 games against Fonini. The Aussie finished the match with 86% of the points from the first serve (42/49), had 27 winners and 16 unforced errors while also having 6/11 break points.
The two players each won a game in the first set (1-1), however it was also the last for the Italian in the first leg of the game as Kokkinakis won the next five from there, finishing the set in 31 minutes.
In this particular game, rhythm was very difficult for both players to find as the game was suspended a total of 5 times on Tuesday before finally being suspended and rescheduled to Wednesday.
In the 2.5 sets played, Kokkinakis had won the first two and there were still a few points left for the Australian to qualify.
The world number 110. had no problems in the second set, which he won in 36 minutes with a 2-0 set lead. In the final set, Kokkinakis found another break as Wednesday’s game ended 6-2 and qualified for the ’64’ stage.
