Elena Rybakina reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open for the first time in her career, defeating world No. 1 Iga Sviontek in 90 minutes by 2-0 sets (6-4, 6-4).
Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina caused the big upset by defeating world no. 1 Iga Sviontek, winning 6-4, 6-4 after 90 minutes to qualify for the quarterfinals of the Australian for the first time in her career to qualify.
The Ukrainian and world No. 25, after KOing last year’s Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins, also sidelined this year’s tournament favorite, playing the trusted tennis forward against the confused Sfiondek, who appeared incapacitated from the start.
Poland with “Guten Morgen” received a remark for exceeding the warm-up time, which probably affected Poland, who received a break immediately afterwards. Rybakina used this with her excellent service (80% point gain in the 1st) to make it 2-0.
Sviontek recovered the lost serve in game 4 to equalize 2-2, however Rybakina made it 4-3 with a fresh break to close the 1st set shortly after and took the lead in the game.
Sviontek started the second leg better with a win in the first two games (2:0), but Rybakina immediately got the break back to make it 3:3. The decisive break for the Ukrainian came at the best time (5: 4), when Rybakina sealed the big qualification with an impressive love game.
In the quarterfinals, Rybakina will face Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, who defeated Coco Goff 7-5, 6-3.
