Denis Shapovalov reaches the semi-finals

(Dubai) Canadian Denis Shapovalov reached the semi-finals of the Dubai Tennis Tournament with a 7-6(4), 6-3 win over Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis on Thursday.

Shapovalov took the measure of Berankis, 99and in the world, in one hour and 31 minutes.

The Ontarian distinguished himself with 14 aces during the duel, while his opponent did not manage any. Also, Shapovalov didn’t face any break points.

After a first set in which both players held serve until the tiebreaker, Shapovalov took control of the match in the second set by breaking in the third game.

In this second set, he won 88% of his first serve points and ended the duel with his second break of the match.

It was the fourth duel between the two players. Shapovalov now has three wins against Berankis.

Sixth-seeded Shapovalov will face Czech Jiri Vesely in the next round.

Coming from qualifying, Vesely toppled Novak Djokovic 6-4, 7-6(4) in the quarter-finals. As a result, the Serb will lose his world number one spot to Russian Daniil Medvedev on Monday.

“I watched his game (against Djokovic) and Jiri played extremely well. He is a lefty, like me, and he has a very good serve. It will be a game where there will be a lot of aggressive exchanges. »

This will be the first meeting between Shapovalov and Vesely on the ATP Tour.

The other semi-final will be between second-seeded Russian Andrey Rublev and fifth-seeded Hubert Hurkacz of Poland.
