The stewards at the Australian Open tried to take away the Serbian flag from the fans, confusing it with the Russian one
The stewards working at the Australian Open did not allow fans with the Serbian flag into the stands. This is reported by the British newspaper Daily Mail.
The stewards’ doubts were caused by the similarity of the Serbian flag with the Russian one. The guards had to turn to the Internet to establish that the eagle flag was in fact the symbol of Serbia, not Russia.
After the proceedings, the fan with the Serbian flag was nevertheless allowed into the podium.
Earlier, the Australian Tennis Federation banned spectators from carrying the Russian and Belarusian flags to the stands. Russians and Belarusians compete in a neutral status.
The Australian Open takes place in Melbourne from 16 to 29 January.
