Australian Open: In the semifinals, Khachanov is waiting for Tsitsipas or Lekhetska
Sebastian Korda was eliminated in the third set of his match against Karen Khachanov and the Russian reached the semifinals of the Australian Open where he will meet the winner of Tsitsipas – Lekhetska.
Karen Khachanov becomes the first tennis player to secure a spot in the Australian Open semifinals after Sebastian Korda was eliminated in the third set.
With that, the world No. 20 continued his excellent presence in Melbourne and at the Majors as this marks his second straight Grand Slam after the 2022 US Open.
The very consistent Khachanov was there in front of goal 7-6(5), 6-3, 3-0 as his opponent pulled out of the fight and dealt with a wrist injury early in the 2nd set.
Khachanov awaits the winner of the match between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Jiri Lekhetska in Australia’s “4” (around 12 p.m., Eurosport).
Khachanov put on a 7-0 run, 2-3 down in the second set, taking advantage of Korda’s injury woes, with the 21-year-old American failing to finish the match the way he would have liked in his first appearance at a Grand Slam -Quarterfinal organization.
The 26-year-old Russian fell on serve to take a 5-4 lead in the opening set, but regrouped in the tie-break and paved the way for eventual victory.
In the second set, Khachanov capitalized on Korda’s problematic serve due to a wrist problem to take two breaks in a row to make it 6-3.
Korda looked helpless at Rod Laver Arena and after a medical time out and three games in the 3rd set he decided to retire, ending a great Australian Open that included victories over Medvedev and Hurkac in the 3rd and 4th rounds.
