The winner of 39 Grand Slam tournaments, former world number one American Billie Jean King said that Russian and Belarusian tennis players should be allowed to participate in Wimbledon in 2023.
In the spring of 2022, the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) announced that Russians and Belarusians were banned from playing at Wimbledon and other tournaments in the UK due to the situation in Ukraine. Earlier it became known that the organizers of Wimbledon are considering the option of allowing athletes from Russia and Belarus to participate in the tournament in 2023.
– I think the Russians and Belarusians should receive prize money. Just let them play and get their money, ranking points. They must have them. I hope that they (the organizers) will do so. Life is too short. However, we are a platform to discuss this. I think this is important,” King said at a press conference.
Russian and Belarusian tennis players are allowed to tournaments in a neutral status by the decisions of the ATP and WTA.
