Djokovic: “This is the biggest win of my life”
Novak Djokovic praised Stefano Tsitsipas after winning the Australian Open, saying it was the best win of his career given what he’s been through over the last year.
Novak Djokovic (No.1) won the 10th Australian Open of his career by defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas (No.3) 3-0 in the final and his post-match remarks were clearly emotional.
The Serbian tennis star praised and idolized Tsitsipas, spoke about how important it is for small countries like Serbia and Greece, which have no tradition in the sport, to have players at the highest level and stressed that this is the greatest win of his life.
Djokovic explained in detail the receipt of the trophy:
“First of all, I would like to say that I am moved by Stefanos’ words. Thank you for being so kind and respectful. We all agree that we’re both competitive on the pitch, but we respect and acknowledge each other. Congratulations on a great tournament. It was a great fight It’s definitely not your last final, you still have a lot of time ahead of you.”
I want to congratulate your team and family. I know how much time you spend trying to be a better player and person. You’re one of the most professional players I’ve ever met and one of the most interesting guys I know.
I just want to make a comment by closing Greece and Serbia. We are two small countries, without a tennis tradition, without many inspiring players who have reached this level. The message to all the young players around the world who see these images and dream of being where we are is one:
Keep dreaming, because anything is possible. Don’t let anyone take away your dream. It doesn’t matter where you come from. The more disadvantages and difficulties you have at the beginning, the bigger you will become. Stefanos and I are proof of that. Don’t let anyone take away your dream. Water it like a flower, find people who believe in this dream, dream and you will succeed.
What a journey this has been for me, my family and my team. I don’t take anything for granted. I know you tolerate me (ss his people). You see the harder side of my character. I appreciate the patience and love you give me. I don’t know if you will ever forgive me for what I have put before you. This trophy belongs to both you and me. Thanks for the love and support.
I have to say that this was one of the toughest tournaments for me in terms of challenge. Didn’t play last year and came back this year… I want to thank all the people who made Australia feel good to me. There’s a reason I play my best tennis in Australia, before the legendary Rod Laver. Thank you for giving again today.
I try to pinch myself and live in these moments. I know I talk a lot but try to bear with myself a little longer. Considering the circumstances, I can say that this is the greatest victory of my life.
I want to thank the organization, the volunteers, everyone who is part of this organization and who has been here every day. This year there was a record number of visitors. I know people were in the squares. Thanks for making it one of the biggest events.”
