“Djokovic goes out on skill, on physical and psychological form” – Tursunov

Serb Novak Djokovic wins thanks to his skill, physical and psychological form, according to former tennis player, Russian coach Dmitry Tursunov.

Djokovic defeated Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Australian Open final on Sunday to win his 22nd Grand Slam title, matching Rafael Nadal’s record.

– I think that young people are not yet ready [к победам над Джоковичем]. Novak has a huge amount of experience behind him. It seems to me that the only way to win these finals, to beat such players is to play boldly, unbridled. How, for example, Rune beat Djokovic [в финале парижского «Мастерса»]because trying to outplay him at the back line or being conservative is a game of nowhere.

There is no feeling that he is on his last breath, as is often the case. Such a feeling was not long before Roger finished: it was clear that there was no longer that reserve of skill on which one could simply ride. But Novak leaves both on skill, and on physical form, and on psychological. It is very difficult to imagine that a young guy will now come out and run across him.

He needs to be played. And to beat, you need to have several components. Therefore, it seems to me that the younger generation still lacks these components. Yes, there are separate episodes – Danya Medvedev beat him in the final of the US Open 2021 – but it must be borne in mind that Novak then played under enormous pressure.

I think many experts would say that Novak played then quite passively, which does not happen in the Grand Slam finals. At the same time, Danya played really well, there are no questions for him. But it is very difficult to imagine under what pressure Novak was playing then,” Tursunov told Metaratings.ru.

Djokovic is 35 years old, on January 30 he returned to the first line of the ATP rankings, and the Serb also leads the organization’s championship race.
