(Hua Hin) Canada’s Bianca Andreescu earned her ticket to the semi-finals of the Thailand Tennis Open on Friday with a 6-0, 7-6 (3) win over Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk

First seed in the tournament and 42e world player, Andreescu has still not lost a round since the start of the competition.

The 22-year-old Ontarian completely dominated the opening set, earning 74% of the points on her serve and 72% of the points on her rival’s serve.

In that first set, she only faced one break point — which she saved in the sixth game — and broke three in four attempts.

Andreescu looked destined for a convincing victory, having taken a 5-1 lead in the second set thanks to breaks in the first and fifth games.

Serving with a 5-2 lead, Andreescu experienced his first failure of the match and allowed Kostyuk to extend the duel. In the next game, Andreescu let slip three match points on the Ukrainian’s serve, then lost her serve again without even scoring a single point.

Andreescu was able to cause the tiebreaker, but she soon found herself in a deficit when she lost the first two points. She recovered by getting four consecutive mini-breaks.

Andreescu will make her ninth career semi-final and will face Lesia Tsurenko, another Ukrainian, for the first time on the WTA Tour.

Tsurenko, 136e in the world, advanced to the semi-finals with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win over Germany’s Tatjana Maria, ranked 63e.

Andreescu is looking for a first title since winning the U.S. Open in 2019. That same year, she also won the Rogers Cup in Toronto and the Indian Wells Open in California.
