Petros Tsitsipas and Alexandros Skorillas gave it their all but eventually lost 6-7, 4-6 to Gonzalo Escobar/Diego Hidalgo, with Ecuador reducing to 2-1 in the Davis Cup clash with Greece.

Greece got off to an impressive start in their bid for promotion to Davis Cup World Group I on Saturday with victories from Stefanos Tsitsipas and Aristotelis Thanos, with Ecuador’s response following a day later.

This happened as part of the doubles match that took place on Sunday afternoon (February 5th) in which the Escobar/Hidalgo duo won 7-6, 6-4 against Petros Tsitsipas/Alexandros Skorillas dropping his first win of the series to 2-1.

It means that Stefanos Tsitsipas, who follows in the game with Andres Andrade, has an opportunity to seal promotion for our national team. We remind you that promotion to World Group I is ensured by the team that achieves the first three victories.

The 1st set was decided in a tie-break, with Tsitsipas and Skorila even erasing their opponents’ 6 break points. The Ecuadorian players, however, went into the tiebreak better, leading 4/1 and then closing the set 7-6(4).

In the second part of the game, Escobar and Hidalgo only needed a break to make it 4:3 in the 7th game, which they used immediately after the 5:3. Tsitsipas and Skorilas reduced to 5-4 and then earned a break point (30/40), but three points in a row sealed the victory for the Ecuadorian players.

Then follows Stefanos Tsitsipas’ encounter with Andres Andrade, with the world No. 3 ready to seal promotion for the Greek team.
