Sakkari: Vekic’s opponents in the Leeds quarter-finals
Donna Vekic defeated Madison Brengle 2-0 and will be the opponent of Maria Sakkari in the quarterfinals of the Upper Austria Ladies Linz.
One of her best friends on the tour, Donna Vekic, meets Maria Sakkari in the quarter-finals of the Upper Austria Ladies Linz on Friday (October 2nd).
The 27-year-old Greek (No. 7), who won back-to-back sets at the 250 tournament in Austria this week, met her next opponent from the pair of Donna Vekic and Madison Brengle.
After 73 minutes of play, the Croatian and No. 33 tennis player in the world beat the American and No. 82 with 6-3, 6-1 and “sealed” her very interesting date with Sakkari, in the “8” best of the institution.
On the WTA Tour, the two have faced each other five times in the past, with the 26-year-old and No. 5 on the board at Leeds holding the H2H by a wide 4-1 in her favour.
Their last meeting last year was in the round of 16 in San Diego, where Vekic won without dropping a set.
In total, Sakkari and Vekic have crossed swords seven times at professional level (including ITF tournaments), with the Croatian counting five wins over the Greek champions’ two.
However, their clash promises to be impressive as Vekic is in superb game form and together with Maria’s good week at Leeds a hard fought match is expected.
