Who does the national team meet in the Davis Cup?

Hearing the national team’s next opponents in the Davis Cup may not be scary, but Slovakia have a strong line-up and are certainly dangerous.

Excitement reigns in Greece after ceremonial qualification for Davis Cup World Group I after 19 years in a packed OAKA in the presence of Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Greek tennis player led the country into the top flight and is now invited to take another step alongside his teammates/compatriots.

Next September (16-17/09) we will host the match between Greece and Slovakia for promotion to the World Group I play-offs, where we will maintain our presence in the Davis Cup finals in a unique event.

Slovakia secured their place in the World Group final but were beaten 4-0 by the Netherlands and now have to defend their place in World Group I against Greece.

Slovakia’s top tennis player is left-handed Alex Molkan, who is ranked No. 52 in the world (career-high No. 38) and is certainly also a threat for Tsitsipas, who is set to come off the US Open and a possible long run in New York could be next week affecting his Davis Cup status.

Molkan defeated Stanislas Wawrinka in five sets at this year’s Australian Open before being beaten again in five sets by Felix Ozer Aliasim in the second round to take a 2-0 lead.

In addition to Molkan, the Slovakian team includes the experienced Norbert Gobos, No. 121 in the world (former No. 82), as well as Josef Kovalik (No. 133), Lukas Klein (24 years old, No. 142).

Surely Slovakia’s average placement is much better than Greece’s and we will count on two wins by Stefanos Tsitsipas to win the doubles qualifying for the 2024 play-offs.

A difficult mission, but not impossible, especially with the support of thousands of Greeks in the stands of maybe Kallimarmaros.
