Barty intact, Fernandez excluded from the top-20

PARIS, France – Poland’s Iga Swiatek finished fourth in the world on Monday thanks to a victory in Doha on Saturday, followed by finalist Estonia Kontaveit in a WTA ranking still dominated by Ashleigh Barty.

The 20-year-old, winner of Roland Garros in 2020, jumps four places thanks to her performance in Qatar, where she conceded only one set throughout the tournament, eliminating two other members of the top-10: Maria Sakkari from Greece and Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus. .

Sabalenka also falls to third place in the WTA standings in favor of Czech Barbora Krejcíková, who remains far behind Australian Barty by almost 3,000 points.

The other Czech in the top-10, Karolina Pliskova, continues to fall slowly, still injured. The former No. 1 has not yet played in games this year.

Defeated by Sakkari in the quarterfinals of the Doha tournament, the young American Cori Gauff (17) also climbed four places and returned to the top 20, in 19th place. Sloane Stephens’s compatriot jumped 18 places in the standings thanks to her victory in the Guadalajara tournament (No. 39).

Canada’s Leylah Fernandez dropped two places to 21st in the world. Bianca Andreescu, a compatriot, maintained her 43rd place. For her part, 142nd, Canadian Rebecca Marino climbed 11 places.

Professional Tennis Players Association (ATP) gave awards to players based on the results of the 2025 season.

Carlos Alcaraz, the leader in the world rankings, became the best tennis player of the year. His main rival was Jannik Sinner.

Rublev beat Vachereau at the World Tennis Continental Cup in China

Russian tennis player Andrey Rublev defeated the representative of Monaco, Valentin Vachereau, at the World Tennis Continental Cup tournament in Shenzhen (China).

Rublev, representing the world team, beat Vachereau from the European team with a score of 2:6, 7:6 (7:5), 10:7.

The overall score at the tournament was 3:2 in favor of the world team.

Rublev’s next opponent will be Italian Flavio Cobolli, Vachereau will face Zhang Zhizhen from China. Both meetings will take place on Sunday.

The tournament takes place December 26–28. The eight participants are divided into two teams: Team Europe and Team World. Each player will play two singles matches, and two doubles matches will also be played.
