Wu performed his miracle and became the first Chinese to win an ATP title
Yibing Wu, 23, defeated Isner 2-1 in the Dallas Open final to become the first Chinese to win an ATP Tour title.
Chinese prodigy Yibing Wu ended his dream week in Dallas by winning the Dallas Open title.
Wu, 23, saved four championship points from John Isner and managed to beat the giant of tiebreaks with the amazing 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 7-6(12) and was the first Chinese in ATP Tour history to win a Tour title.
Prior to this week, no Chinese player had reached an Open Era final or beat a top 10 opponent. Wu did both in Texas, including beating Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals.
“I made history for my country. I’m very happy and proud of myself and thank all my fans and team for the support. I couldn’t have done it without you,” said the up-and-coming Chinese at the award ceremony.
The epic finale lasted 2 hours and 58 minutes and there was not a single break. Wu saved three break points while Isner, who hit 44 aces, saved both of his opponent’s BPs.
Isner won 501 tiebreaks (an all-time record), but Wu was a bit more effective in the crisis, saving 4 Isner match points, one at 6-5 in the 2nd set and three in the deciding tiebreak. Wu ended the match with the 5th championship point!
“It’s hard to lose a game like that,” said Isner, who now has a 16-15 record in finals. “I don’t know how many match points I had, but it was definitely a lot. I swear I thought I won that match,” he added.
