Kyrgios for Nadal: “GOAT if Roland Garros wins”
Rafael Nadal’s performance in the Australian Open final against Daniel Medvedev surprised Nick Kyrgios, who didn’t hesitate to call him ‘GOAT’ should he win Roland Garros.
Nick Kyrgios was left speechless by Rafael Nadal’s performance and escape in the Australian Open final against Daniel Medvedev, who was celebrating the 21st career Grand Slam title and second in Melbourne after 2009.
The Greek-Australian tennis player praised the Spanish bullfighter’s fighting spirit and set his own perspective on the eternal leader’s informal struggle, arguing that if Nadal wins the French Open, he will be rightfully considered the GOAT of tennis.
“It was the worst match-up for Rafa. This court doesn’t help him at all. He finds it difficult to score easy points on serve. Medvedev let him play big rallies and was in control of the game. Once Daniel took a 2: 0 lead, 0 set, I thought it was impossible for Nadal to come back, especially at 2-0 3-2 0/40.
“I came back to the match after 2.5 hours and thought ‘no way’,” Kyrgios emphasized in the podcast.
Nadal finally ended one of the biggest upheavals in Grand Slam history, winning his 21st Major title, leaving his 20 main rivals, Djokovic and Federer, in the top 20.
“I’ve never doubted Nadal more in his career. I think if he wins in Paris he will be GOAT without a doubt,” added Kyrgios, who shared the Melbourne doubles title with Thanasis Kokkinakis.
