Leylah Fernandez passes quarter-final at the Monterrey Tournament
(Monterrey) Quebec’s second-seeded Leylah Annie Fernandez had to work hard, but she earned her ticket to the quarter-final round of the Monterrey Tennis Tournament on Wednesday by defeating China’s Zheng Qinwen in three sets of 6-1, 4-6 and 7-6 (3).
Faced with her one-month junior, Fernandez had to draw on her resources in the third set by saving three break points. The 21and world racket was able to bet on a good first serve to put pressure on Zheng, 77and world, throughout the match.
Zheng had seven aces against two for Fernandez, but the Chinese player also committed 10 double faults against five for Fernandez.
The Quebecer was especially very aggressive in return of service, gorging herself on her opponent’s second balls to save herself with the game.
In the next round, Fernandez will face the winner of the match between Egypt’s Mayar Sherif and China’s Qiang Wang.
