(Dubai) Quebec’s Leylah Annie Fernandez and her American playing partner Bethany Mattek-Sands lost 7-5, 7-5 to Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova and Liudmila Samsonova in the quarter-finals of the Dubai Tennis Championship on Thursday.

Fernandez and Mattek-Sands gave in after one hour and 54 minutes of play.

Kudermetova and Samsonova will meet in the semi-finals with the duo of Ukraine’s Lyudmyla Kichenok and Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko, who ousted China’s Zhaoxang Yang and Russia’s Vera Zvonareva 6-7 (3), 6-2 and 10-8.

On Tuesday, Fernandez had seen her singles run in Dubai come to an abrupt end after she lost a sharp 6-1, 6-1 second-round loss to world No. 1 Iga Swiatek.

For her part, Ontario’s Bianca Andreescu was ousted in the first round 6-3, 6-4 by Kazakh Elena Rybakina on Monday.
