Roger Federer: He will not catch up with Wimbledon
Roger Federer has started preparing to return to the Tour but it’s not possible to give the ‘gift’ at Wimbledon this season.
Roger Federer is determined to return to the professional tour and finish his great career on his own terms and how he deserves it. The 40-year-old Swissman continues to make considerable progress in his recovery but after knee surgery, Severin Louthi says it will be very difficult to catch up with his favorites Wimbledon.
Federer has been out of action since last July after undergoing a third operation shortly after Wimbledon. He underwent his first two surgeries in 2020 where he missed most of the season. As of January 2020, he has managed to compete in just six tournaments.
“He’s still recovering. But he does not only do physiotherapy and ice therapy. He can achieve more and work actively. It not only strengthens the leg muscles, but his whole body. It is a regular preparatory program“Lucy told the German newspaper Tages Anzeiger.
In fact, Federer is set to start racquet and ball training this week, with his wife Mirka Vavrinets, a former Top100 in the WTA, who they met at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and have been together ever since, as a sparring partner.
Lucy thinks it is important that Federer slowly returns to tennis and that careful steps are needed at this stage in the process. Federer’s personal trainer Pierre Paganini, who so far has only been in close contact with Swiss physiotherapist Daniel Troxler, will soon be activated.
It’s not yet clear how much longer the 40-year-old will be away from the tour, with Lucy admitting his chances of playing at Wimbledon are very limited.
“At the moment I can’t say I’m optimistic that he will catch up with Wimbledon. I’m not the one to say it’s impossible, but I can’t imagine it right nowsaid Lucy.
