Russian Daniil Medvedev plays at the level of the top five tennis players in the world, we should always expect victories from him at the Grand Slam tournaments, said Shamil Tarpishchev, president of the Russian Tennis Federation.
On Saturday, Medvedev won the ATP 250 tournament in Doha. In the final, the 27-year-old tennis player beat Briton Andy Murray with a score of 6:4, 6:4. The match lasted 1 hour 46 minutes.
– I can’t say that until recently Medvedev had an unsuccessful series of games. Daniil just starts playing better and better every time, gaining stability. He trains and goes on increasing. In yesterday’s match, there was no doubt that he might not win. With Murray, he played well on the back line, and in other moments, no one had an advantage. Andy’s main trump cards are tenacity and density in the game, and in this component Medvedev outplayed him. Therefore, the result is natural.
We should always expect Grand Slams from Daniil. In reality, Medvedev is now playing at the level of the top five tennis players in the world. There are a lot of equal players in the top of the rating now, maybe only Djokovic stands out. But in order to remove Novak from the first line in the ranking at the end of the season, you need to win Grand Slam tournaments, and Djokovic now has an advantage after winning the Australian Open.
Plus, the Serbian tennis player is really the best at the moment, so it’s unlikely that anyone will be able to get to Djokovic this year. But in some Grand Slam tournaments, anything can happen, – Tarpischev told Metaratings.ru.
Medvedev won the second tournament in a row, last week he won the tournament in Rotterdam. In the updated ATP ranking, the tennis player should rise to seventh place.
