MONTERY, Mexico – Elina Svitolina of Ukraine advanced to the quarterfinals of the WTA 250 tournament in Monterrey, Mexico on Thursday, after defeating Bulgaria’s Victoria Tomova in three sets 7-6 (3), 3 in the second round. -6, 6-2.
Playing as in the previous round with a blue skirt and yellow shirt, the colors of her country, Svitolina, number 1 of the tournament, will face Colombian Camila Osorio in the quarterfinals.
Ukraine, the 15th in the world, had initially considered boycotting its first-round match against Russia’s Anastasia Potapova to protest Moscow’s invasion of her country. Svitolina had warned on Monday that she would refuse to play against Russians or players from Belarus unless they wore neutral colors, which she did.
After her victory over Potapova on Tuesday in the first round, she announced that all the bonuses she won in Monterrey would go to the Ukrainian army.
