LENZERHEIDE, Switzerland – Roger Federer, who underwent knee surgery last year, said on Saturday he would not play in an official tournament at the end of the summer at the earliest.
The 40-year-old tennis star reported on his situation on Swiss television station SRF as he attended an event of the Women’s Alpine Skiing World Cup in Lenzerheide, where he owns a property.
His remarks echoed comments he made in November, when he admitted he would not be well on his way to Wimbledon in June. Federer, however, did not discuss his appearance at the US Open, which starts in New York on August 29.
Federer told the SRF that his recovery is going so well that he is even thinking of returning to the floor. Before the knife last August, the Swiss had stated that the main source of motivation to undergo such an intervention was to ensure a good quality of life with his family and not to return to the highest level, professional tennis.
Federer’s 20 Grand Slam titles allow him to share second place in tennis history with Novak Djokovic. Spaniard Rafael Nadal is alone at the top after winning his 21st Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January.
