Leylah Annie Fernandez advances to the semi-finals
(Monterrey) Quebec’s Leylah Annie Fernandez reached the semi-finals of the Monterrey tennis tournament after defeating China’s Qiang Wang 7-6 (4), 6-4, Friday night.
Fernandez, the second seed, sealed the match in one hour and 47 minutes in Mexico. It was the first career game between Fernandez and Wang, 116and world player.
The 21and world player was broken twice in three occasions, while she stole the serve from the 30-year-old Chinese three times in 10 opportunities.
Fernandez, however, committed three double faults against the ex-12and world player. However, she recovered well by winning 76.2% of the points with her first serve, against only 57.9% for Wang.
Fernandez, who is just 19, will face Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia in the semi-finals on Saturday night. Maia is 69and in the world, and she has never won a tournament in her career.
Fernandez, the 2021 U.S. Open finalist, is chasing a second career singles title on the WTA Tour.
