MONTERIE, Mexico – Quebec Leylah Annie Fernandez rushed to beat Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the final of the Monterrey tournament. He will face Colombian Camila Osorio.
The second sport and 22nd racket in the world, Fernandez quickly led 3-0 in the first set, breaking the serve of her opponent at the first opportunity. She allowed herself a second break in the sixth game to secure a comfortable 5-1 lead and serve for the set.
The dial showed just 22 minutes of play when the 19-year-old sensation won the first set 6-1. Haddad Maya, 69th in the world, defended better in the second set, but lost her serve in the third game, paving the way for Fernandez to win 6-4.
As it had done in the quarterfinals the day before, Fernandez was extremely effective in the first serve in addition to being aggressive in return.
She made four more double faults, equal to her opponent. Quebec also got three aces against two for the Brazilian.
Fernandez, the finalist of the US Open 2021, is chasing a second career title in the WTA Tour singles. He will be entitled to a good challenge against Osorio, who is ranked 44th in the world.
On the way to Monterey, Osorio eliminated his favorite tournament Elina Svitolina from Ukraine in the quarterfinals.
The 20-year-old is also on the hunt for a second career title on the WTA Tour. She triumphed at her home in Bogota last year.
