Stefanos Tsitsipas (No. 3 in the world) meets Jordan Thompson in the 2nd round of Indian Wells on Friday (September 4th) because his opponent defeated Gael Monfils in the tournament premiere 6-3, 6-1.
It took just 64 minutes for the Australian tennis player, ranked No. 87 in the world, to break the resistance of the long-absent Frenchman.
This will be the third meeting between the two players, with the Greek tennis player having won the previous two in Washington in 2019 and Wimbledon in 2022 without dropping a set.
Shelby Rogers is Sakkari’s first opponent
The premiere of the BNP Paribas Open took place in California and the opponent of Maria Sakkari emerged from the first matches for the main draw of the WTA 1000 event.
The Greek champion, world No. 7, meets Shelby Rogers in the round of 64, who needed three sets against compatriot Katie Volinetz to win 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 of the 21 year old.
The much more experienced Rogers, No. 40 in the world, is a nasty demon for Sakkari as she has equal wins in three previous meetings: Wimbledon 2021 and Adelaide and San Jose 2022.
In Round 3 of the BNP Paribas Open, the Sakkari-Rogers pair crossed paths with Linda Fruhvirtova-Angelina Kalinina, with the 17-year-old Czech making a dream debut in California and winning 0-6, 6-2, 6-3 Mayard Sheriff.
Of the rest of Wednesday’s Round 1 results, Evgenia Rodina’s win over Alize Cornet stood out 6-2, 7-5 and by Aleksandra Sasnovich on Kaia Kanepi 6-3, 7-6(5). Rodina will be No.2 Arina Sambalenka’s first opponent.
In the evening program Camila Giorgi did her duty against Aradha Rous and in the 2nd round she meets the number 3 seeded Jessica Pegula.
